Pale woods give an engraving room to speak, but colour is only the beginning. Grain direction changes how a line reads; density decides how dark and even the mark becomes; and patient final sanding lets the design feel part of the wood rather than printed on top.
Birch and ash offer a useful balance for first tests: quiet surfaces, visible life, and enough character that no two finished pieces become exact copies.
