From grain to gift: choosing wood for a clean engraving

Why grain direction, density, and finish matter before the laser ever starts.

Pale woods give an engraving room to speak, but colour is only the beginning. Grain direction changes how a line reads; density decides how dark and even the mark becomes; and patient final sanding lets the design feel part of the wood rather than printed on top.

Birch and ash offer a useful balance for first tests: quiet surfaces, visible life, and enough character that no two finished pieces become exact copies.
